Do you know the history behind it? Here at Sebastiano’s Italian Restaurant, our team of experts is here to tell you all about the history of the best pizza near me. It Is Time For A History Lesson

People have been eating pizza, in one form or another, for centuries. It started out as food for the poor. As far back as antiquity, pieces of flatbread, topped with savories were served as a simple and tasty meal for those who could not afford plates. It was also made for those who were on the go. These early pizzas appear in Virgil’s Aeneid. Shortly after arriving in Latium, Aeneas and his crew sat down beneath a tree and laid out ‘thin wheaten cakes as platters for their meal.’ They then scattered them with mushrooms and herbs they had found in the woods and guzzled them down, crust and all, prompting Aeneas’ son Ascanius to exclaim: “Look! We’ve even eaten our plates!”

But it was in late 18th-century Naples that the pizza as we now know it came into being. Under the Bourbon kings, Naples had become one of the largest cities in Europe – and it was growing fast. Fuelled by overseas trade and a steady influx of peasants from the countryside, its population ballooned from 200,000 in 1700 to 399,000 in 1748. As the urban economy struggled to keep pace, an ever greater number of the city’s inhabitants fell into poverty. The most abject of these were known as lazzaroni, because their ragged appearance resembled that of Lazarus. Numbering around 50,000 they scraped by on the pittance they earned as porters, messengers or casual laborers. Always rushing about in search of work, they needed food that was cheap and easy to eat. Pizzas met this need. Sold not in shops, but by street vendors carrying huge boxes under their arms, they would be cut to meet the customer’s budget or appetite.

As Alexandre Dumas noted in Le Corricolo(1843), a two liard slice would make a good breakfast, while two sous would buy a pizza large enough for a whole family. None of them were terribly complicated. Though similar in some respects to Virgil’s flatbreads, they were now defined by inexpensive, easy-to-find ingredients with plenty of flavors. The simplest were topped with nothing more than garlic, lard, and salt. But others included caciocavallo (a cheese made from horse’s milk), cecenielli (whitebait) or basil. Some even had tomatoes on top. Only recently introduced from the Americas, these were still a curiosity, looked down upon by contemporary gourmets. But it was their unpopularity – and hence their low price – that made them attractive.

How Many Types of Pizzas Are There Really in the World?

Are you wondering how many types of pizza there are out there? Sebastiano’s Italian Restaurant in Hollywood, FL is here to break it down for you. We are the “Italian restaurant near me” you have been searching for. Come in and try our delicious pizza today!

Common Types of Pizza

Since the beginning of time, pizza has gone through many transformations to get to become the dish that it is today. However, there are a few different types of pizza, and choosing the right kind can be difficult because they are very similar. Luckily, we are going to discuss the different types, their history, and what you need to know to make them delicious to serve up the best slices of each kind.

Neapolitan Pizza – The Original

This pie dates back to the 18th century in Naples, Italy. During this time, poor citizens would frequently purchase food such as pizza because it was cheap and could be eaten quickly and easily. Neapolitan pizza is a flatbread with tomatoes, cheese, oil, and garlic. It initially gained popularity because it was affordable, and readily available just about anywhere on the streets. The best part of this classic pizza is that you can still add toppings if you wish to make the pie your own creation.

Chicago Pizza  – Deep Dish

A pie so great, it gets its name from the city it was created in. During the early 1900s, Italian immigrants were searching for the neapolitan pizza they knew and loved when they came across a thicker crust with raised edges, and reversed the ingredients. They followed up by adding slices of mozzarella lining the dough, followed by their toppings of choice and crushed tomatoes. This original creation led to new restaurants opening up all over for customers to try new types of pizza.

New York Style Pizza

This has become the most popular style of pizza in the United States. Even though neapolitan and New York style share a lot of similarities, there are some major differences. Some people believe it is in the way the dough is handled, however, the true difference is that the crust should be thin like a neapolitan pizza, but thick enough to fold in half lengthwise. This makes it possible to eat the pizza with your hands instead of with utensils, which makes it perfect for NYC living.

Sicilian Pizza

Some think of this pizza as a distant cousin to the Chicago style pizza, however, there are many differences. No matter how you think of it, this square cut, thick crust pizza form has a spongier consistency than other pizzas. Sicilian is usually topped with tomato sauce, onions, herbs, anchovies, and then covered with bread crumbs in other countries, while in America it is just tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese.

5 Pasta Dishes to Try at Sebastiano’s Italian Restaurant

Pasta is synonymous with Italy and any visit to an Italian restaurant should include a test of their pasta dishes. Pasta is a reflection of the authenticity and understanding of a restaurant of Italian cuisine. A good Italian restaurant will understand that it’s more than just having good pasta, but having a variety of options. If you have found yourself searching “pasta restaurant near me” or “Italian restaurant near me” to find the perfect pasta dish, contact Sebastiano’s Italian Restaurant in Hollywood, Florida.

1) Angel Hair Puttanesca

Puttanesca has interesting origins but at its core it is a simple Neopolitan dish. It features a rich marinara sauce mixed with capers and Kalamata olives. This dish has a comforting, basic quality as the core of its flavor comes from only a few ingredients. As a matter of fact, its first iteration was made due to a lack of other ingredients. The chef utilized the only things he had present and, with that, made the first puttanesca.

2) Linguine Carbonara

The beauty of the carbonara is that each chef can make it their own with their own distinct recipe. The recipe of the carbonara is not fixed and therefore each restaurant experience is unique. At Sebastiano’s Italian Restaurant, their carbonara is made with prosciutto instead of the typical bacon and it is mixed with onions, giving depth of flavor.

3) Lobster Ravioli

Ravioli is another diverse pasta. The ravioli can be made and filled with a plethora of ingredients, making it ideal for chefs to put their own personal touch in their cuisine. Sebastiano’s Italian Restaurant serves a lobster ravioli in a pink sauce. The pink sauce is a rich blend of marinara sauce and alfredo sauce, giving the lobster a balanced, delicious flavor.

4) Four Cheese & Pear stuffed Purse

This delicious and unique dish is bold with flavor. The cheese of the purse pairs beautifully with the sweetness of the pear to create a rich experience that bursts and melts in your mouth. It is served in light alfredo sauce to enhance the flavors of the pasta.

5) Fettuccini Alfredo

The fettucini alfredo started as the fettucine al burro. It was made simply with parmesan cheese and butter which would form a thick sauce as it melted from the heat of the pasta. Over time it transformed as chefs began to add their own twist to the recipe. Today’s fettucini alfredo is a bit more complicated than its ancestor but it is just as delicious. The tradition of fettucini alfredo is still kept in many Italian homes and you can get a taste of this delicious tradition at Sebastiano’s Italian Restaurant.
